Exercise 1: Revisiting The Terrain Survey

Exercise: Resampling the initial survey terrain.
Purpose: To resample and improve our initial survey techniques. and analyze the effectiveness of various interpolation methods.
Location: Beneath the campus pedestrian bridge on the Water Street end near the Haas Fine Arts Building. Survey was conducted on the upper edge of the river floodplain near the seasonal high water line within an area surrounded by Salix bebbinia shrubs. Location was chosen based on sand availability, distance from other surveys, and distance from bridge 'drip zone.'

Initial Survey: Tuesday Sept 15 3:00pm-4:00pm
Survey Visitation: Wednesday Sept 23 8:00am-9:00am
Collection Methods: Buried and leveled frame within sand. Framed marked with 5cm and 10cm increments. Measuring stick laid across frame while another measuring stick was utilized to measure height distance of sand features. Data was collected in an Excel sheet using portable tablet and laptop.
Exercise 2: Distance/Azimuth Survey Method
Collectors: Katie Lueth, Dillian Berg
Exercise: Collect data using bearing and distance using a compass and laser distance measuring tool and project that data on a map.
Purpose: To become familiar with alternative 'low tech' methods of surveying.
Location: On the UWEC campus mall between the Davies Center, Phillips Hall, Schofield Hall, and the McIntyre Library
Collection Date: Sept 30, 2015 2:30pm-4:00pm
Collection Methods: Bearing was collected using an azimuth compass. Distance was collected using a laser distance measuring tool and a laser receiver. Data was collected in an Excel sheet using a portable tablet.
Exercise 3: Unmanned Aerial System Mission Planning
Collectors: Prof. Hupy and the Geospatial Field Methods Class
Purpose: To become familiar with various UAV platforms.
Location: : Beneath the campus pedestrian bridge on the Water Street end near the Haas Fine Arts Building. Survey was conducted on the upper edge of the river floodplain near the seasonal high water line within an area surrounded by Salix bebbinia shrubs.
Collection Date: Monday October 5th 3:00pm-5:00pm
Collection Methods: Unmanned Aerial System equipped with a high resolution camera.
Navigation Exercise
Collectors: Katie Lueth and Geospatial Field Methods Class
Purpose: To begin to use non-technological methods in navigation.
Location: Sidewalk behind Philips Hall on UWEC campus.
Collection Date: Monday October 12th 3:30pm-4:00pm.
Collection Methods: Walking 100 meters and counting the paces it takes to reach that distance.
Navigation Exercise with Map and Compass
Collectors: Katie Lueth, Scott Nesbit, Casey Aumann
Purpose: To use a map and compass to navigate a terrain.
Location: The Priory Woodland Area
Collection Date: October 26th 3:00pm-6:30pm
Collection Methods: Using known pacing distance to navigate to various points using maps, compass, and GPS.
Topographic Survey Exercise
Collectors: Katie Lueth, Grant Muelhauser, Scott Nesbit, Nik Anderson
Purpose: To take survey grade topographic data and know the difference between various methods.
Location: UWEC Campus Mall
Collection Date: Friday Nov 13 3:00-4:00, Wednesday November 18 4:00-5:30
Collection Methods: Dual Frequency GPS, Total Station Survey
Arc Collector Exercise
Collectors: Katie Lueth
Purpose: To become familiar with ArcCollector and use the app on our smartphones to collect data.
Location: Perimeter of the UWEC Davies Center
Collection Date: Monday November 23 3:15-4:15pm
Collection Methods: ArcGIS Collector App, ArcGIS
